MARTY WILLIAMS: Long Time Comin’
InMoonBay, 2010
JAZZ VOCALS – Bay Area pianist/singer Williams offers up classic soul-jazz with a great craggy voice and a bluesy/r&b delivery that’s part Oscar Brown, part Dr. John and all cool. Solid band anchored by the always-marvelous Ruth Davies on bass. Really likeable stuff here.
Fo’s Picks: 3, 6 … also 2, 4, 7, 10, 11, 12
1. 6:02 – late-night creep: soft edges, soulful croon & nice instrumental break
2. 6:37 – cool groove for this standard, spare piano & cool guitar at the fore
3. 4:57 – slow ‘n’ funky: a great, extra-greasy version of the Beatles tune
4. 5:50 – slick groove, somewhat cleaned-up version of a sassy classic
5. 5:59 – starts solo as a spare, lilting waltz; switches to a light quartet swing
6. 7:38 – walkin’ groove with attitude: everyone sounds great, esp. bass/piano
7. 4:49 – upbeat stroll with a gospel touch, sort of a Lou Rawls feel, guitar solo
8. 5:37 – cute twist on a Thelonious Monk tune; quirky lyric, swinging breaks
9. 3:14 – breezy ‘60s showtune/standard, gets right to the point, upbeat solos
10. 6:14 – another ‘60s staple, slow & soulful with a poignant touch; well done
11. 7:27 – happy, strolling standard: solos have a nicely casual feel
12. 7:30 – slow and haunting, but with romantic flourishes and bluesy breaks
