STEVE ABSHIRE & PAUL WINGO: Detour Ahead
Patuxent, 2010
MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Two guitarists pay tribute to their musical forebears, Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis, who collaborated on a few projects in the 1970s. The music is bright and swinging, with both men playing cool, sparkling lines over solid yet unobtrusive rhythmic support. Very pleasant stuff: won’t knock anyone’s socks off, but well presented. Good for a laid-back break.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 7, 9, 10
1. 5:12 – easygoing swing, singing solos
2. 7:01 – cool walk, gets a bit bluesy
3. 9:19 – light, airy, very sunny standard
4. 4:05 – breezy bossa nova; rather thin
5. 8:59 – nice warm ballad, a lazy pace
6. 4:01 – cute bounce, everybody solos
7. 7:40 – swingin’ feel-good blues jam
8. 2:12 – standard ballad, just guitar
9. 4:27 – upbeat stroll, jaunty dialogue
10. 6:05 – sweet duet, upbeat & loose
11. 6:50 – oddball medley, goes in a few different directions
