So many indie pop bands claim to sound like Arcade Fire, since that band’s Grammy win last year. This one, from Manchester, England, actually does. Combine emotional songwriting, mixed male and female voices, big orchestration, and passionate delivery. The performances here are sometimes very good, sometimes overdone, sometimes meh.
No FCC issues.
*** Mid tempo. Jangly guitar, male lead vox, angelic female chorus. Very melodic. (4:23)
*** Moderately fast. Like an anthem. Big, big choral singing. Lots of strings. (4:40)
Slow-to-fast & soft-to-loud build. Synth as church organ. Add strings, add voices, keep adding layers. Gets sappy & pretentious. (7:41)
Slow. Male vox with acoustic guitar. Folksy singer/songwriter sorta. Doesn’t fit here. (1:48)
* Very slow to mid tempo. Male lead vocal with female chorus. Piano and strings. (5:18)
*** Fast catchy pop. Big orchestral sound. Bit of everything, but just a little vox. (6:28)
** Fast, loud. More guitar but some strings too. Big choral singing again, as in #2. (4:53)
Slow, forlorn. Mainly the male voice with reverb, backed by piano. (1:48)
Slow, sad. Pounding piano opens, strings join. Add voices toward end. Gets syrupy. (5:13)
* Slow-to-fast & soft-to-loud build. Male lead & female backing vox. More guitar (and more interesting guitar) than elsewhere. (6:02)
* Slow and melancholy. Spacey, distant voices. Chiming guitar played as mandolin. (4:16)
