NORDIC CONNECT: Spirals
artistShare, 2011
MODERN JAZZ – Canada and Sweden meet in this quintet led by sisters Ingrid and Christine Jensen. This is the group’s second release, with a compelling blend of sounds that might reference electronica and indie pop (1), or electric Miles Davis (3), or just dig into a space all its own (5). Pianist Maggi Olin contributes five of the compositions. Good stuff.
Ingrid Jensen : trumpet, flugelhorn
Christine Jensen : alto & soprano sax
Maggi Olin : piano, Fender Rhodes
Mattias Welin : bass
Jon Wikan : drums, percussion
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7
1. 6:48 – great sound: pulsating theme, Fender Rhodes, techno-inspired drums
2. 5:16 – calm melody, but with big, bold splashes of bright color, good horn solos
3. 8:39 – horn dialogue drifts gradually into a dark Miles Davis style pulse
4. 8:42 – light but propulsive drums carry upbeat, friendly melody with soprano sax
5. 6:04 – enigmatic sound: complex motion under muted trumpet, spacey ending
6. 7:19 – slow, drifting: flugelhorn & sax solos waft over a broad, hazy landscape
7. 6:44 – colorful midtempo with tight horns, sunny keyboard, good drums w/cajon
8. 5:11 – slow, steady march: bass solo adds a tender quality, builds up near end
9. 5:14 – fusion intro w/electronics on trumpet; switches to lively spinning rhythm
