Edwyn Collins/ “Losing Sleep” / Heavenly
Scottish crooner best known for his mid-90s hit “A Girl Like You”. This was his first album recorded following a serious brain hemorrhage in 2005. Songs on this record are a bit less quirky. Voice sounds a bit weaker, and gets lost in some of the over-production of layers of instrument. Also sounds a bit odd to hear such a quirky voice sing fairly straight-forward songs. Still, nothing unpleasant. Mostly upbeat poppy songs, featuring electric guitars, often layered, with fast drums. Guest vocalists featured heavily throughout the album.
No FCCs detected. Favorites include: 6, 8, 9, 11.
1. 3:16 Upbeat, slightly dramatic, sounds a bit like a song from a spy movie, or a theme song.
2. 3:24 Reminiscent of doo-wop girl groups of the 60s. Upbeat, harmonized “ooo ooo”s in the background.
3. 4:22 Duet with another male vocalist. Uptempo, layered fast strummed guitar chords.
4. 3:24 Midtempo, sounds a bit outdated with synth keyboards and fading in/out synths.
5. 3:01 Upbeat, happy song. Guitars, tambourines, occasional synths and vocal “ooo”s.
6. *4:27 Occasional vocal harmony with other voice, sparse/sudden guitar chords, steady midtempo. Cool muted-electric effect on guitar about halfway through.
7. 4:09 Upbeat duet with another male singer. Fairly standard alternative-pop song.
8. *3:34 Nice dramatic vocals, has a bit of an upbeat/heavier “Wicked Game” feel to it in the first verse. Turns a bit cliché, features another vocalist, but still pretty catchy.
9. *3:37 Midtempo, clean electric guitar riffs, catchy beat, with some nice unconventional notes.
10. 3:57 Clean electric guitar, another male vocalist, standard song, you know the drill…
11. *3:17 Slower, predominantly vocals & clean guitar, with a bit of synth keyboards. Builds more with a slow, tambourine-infused beat and harmonies halfway through.
12. 2:18 Another slower mostly acoustic guitar/vocal/synth track. Even sparser!
