GRAHAM REYNOLDS & THE GOLDEN ARM TRIO: Duke!
Innova, 2011
JAZZ / CLASSICAL / ELECTRONICA – YES YES YES! First things first: Golden Arm is NOT a trio; it’s an orchestra with a funny name. This incredible tribute to Duke Ellington has three parts: tracks 1-7 are all-out, with muscular brass and crushing piano over slamming drums for a sort of rockabilly flavor. 8-15 are string arrangements of the same tunes (try playing these as a suite), and 16-22 are cool remixes of them. I think Duke would have been shocked by all this… and then he would have *loved* it.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21
1. 5:05 – YOW! fast powerhouse chug
2. 3:08 – runaway train, catchy & fun
3. 3:08 – aggressively thudding stomp
4. 3:55 – lowdown lope; explodes
5. 3:49 – fun, upbeat elephant march
6. 1:31 – solo piano, tender & aching
7. 2:38 – swings with manic energy
8. 2:30 – swaying dream for strings
9. 1:37 – driving strings
10. 3:05 – steady pulse, bittersweet
11. 1:32 – slow drone… suspense!
12. 1:16 – Hitchcock movie pizzicato
13. 1:55 – slow, melancholy strings
14. 2:37 – mysterious, halting creep
15. 2:15 – lovely flowing strings
16. 3:22 – cool downtempo exotica
17. 3:08 – chopped-up & nicely weird
18. 3:19 – creepy mix of tracks 3 & 15
19. 3:10 – retro-asian stomp + strings
20. 4:20 – echoing, #4 with a bit of 13
21. 3:29 – DJ Spooky: #9 gets funky
22. 3:09 – cut & paste electro-samba
