Bristol psych-rockers Malachai return with the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2009 debut The Ugly Side of Love. They retain their signature 60’s psychedelic underground sound—smothered with sticky-sweet reverb and a heavy reliance on delay pedals, but they expand their palate somewhat, with touches of funk and trip-hop. The resulting album is quite solid--a total smorgasbord of varied sounds with something for everyone.
ALL TRACKS FCC CLEAN
RIYL: The People’s Temple, The Savages, Gonjasufi, John Lennon
1. Moody orchestral intro 2. Stutter-step drums and lots of delay pedals. *3. Crunchy and raw (with a hint of metal) but with gentle vocal bridges. *4. Dreamy psychedelic. Excellent guest vocals courtesy of Katy Wainright. 5. 30 seconds of slow organ and with bouncy rhythm stick percussion. Ulrich Schnauss, anyone? 6. Clattering percussion and an upbeat rockin’ atmosphere. The same wandering vocals, and smeared harmonies. *7. Slow and minimalist. Darker, with heavy galloping percussion. *8. Slow plodding acapella. Gradually cymbols and a gentle strings part enters the mix. Nice trip-hop accents—an obvious nod to Portishead. 9. Dense and busy but with plenty of pop aesthetics. *10. A slow vocal showcase with contemplative lyrics. *11. Midtempo jammer with growls of synth and nice chipper drumloops and funky loops. 12. Slow love ballad.
13. 50 second orchestral intermission. Beautiful looped reversed samples. 14. Midtempo percussive rocker.
