JOHN SURMAN: Flashpoint
Cuneiform, 2011
MODERN BIG-BAND – From early in his esteemed career, this dynamite one-off session – recorded for German radio in 1969 – finds saxophonist John Surman leading a 10-piece band made up mostly of top British players. Solos are spread around and all quite good. Surman’s ecstatic soprano sax work on #1 nearly steals the show, until he somehow tops it on baritone in #5. The band is strong, flexible, and does a great job.
Fo’s Picks: try any track; 4 & 5 are my favorites
1. 8:41 – thick modal stew: soprano sax wails & twists in long solo, spiritual piano
2. 8:41 – lilting tune, catchy ensemble: stirring flugelhorn, sax looks deep within
3. 5:56 – quick-paced big band romp: trombone warbles & wobbles, big drum solo
4. 8:47 – gorgeous tune! soprano sax flares; trombone, tenor, bass cool it down
5. 8:32 – yow! free jazz flipout into high-energy locomotive bop; edgy horn solos
