Tania Saleh Wehde 2011
--All Tracks are FCC CLEAN--
The title of this album "Wehde" in Arabic means three different things: "a girl", "solitude" and "national unity" at the same time. It is a perfect translation of Lebanese singer Tania Saleh's state of mind in a country tormented by sectarian, political and social divisions. The album is an independent alternative Arabic musical experiment produced between the years 2004 and 2010, released in 2011. It is Saleh’s second album and includes a variety of musical genres and tracks (in Arabic) plus a bonus track (#11) in English.
**My picks: 2, 5, 11
1. Ya Wled (2:34): Translates into “Hey Kids!” this poppy chaotic song addresses politicians as if they were kids who need to be told to get along.
**2. Wehde (4:17): Trans is “Unity” or “A Girl” or “Solitude” (the song banks on the word play. Begins with seductive vocals then picks up the tempo and sounds a bit bluesy and Oriental at the same time.
3. Rah El Hob (2:56): Trans “Love Is Gone” is one of the harsher sounding tracks, loud but somehow uplifting at once.
4. Ayya Shi I (0:57): Trans “Any Thing” This short track is like a ditty, addictive and short, warning about the dangers of love. A second version of this song is included on this (see Track 10).
**5. Shou (5:02): Trans “What?” is grave disturbing haunting song with a slow ghost-like echo and tempo. The song is about a man who tells a woman woman that he knows that she is being unfaithful to him (and has known for a while).
6. Lezim Nem (3:14): Trans. “I Need Sleep” is poppy, with Tania’s vocals attempting to rap a bit about all the things she needs to do every day. It is repetitive and begins almost like the recitation of a poem to music.
7. Ma Elna Shi (3:14): Trans. “We Have Nothing” begins with a flute then turns into a poppy tune about wasting an hour with one’s lover/partner without doing anything.
8. Omar & Ali (4:07): Tania’s vocals are strong here as she calls out to Omar and Ali (who represent Sunnis and Shiites) to embrace each other. Pleasant mid tempo beat.
9. Tmanta’sh Moulaya (4:06): This is an old Bedouin tune, revived and revamped with a steady drum beat and loud bagpipe-like music. Not fast, but definitely not a ballad.
10. Ayya Shi II (1:34): This is the second version of the Track 4, jazzed up and Westernized.
**11. Slow Down (4:39): This track is in English and is instantly addictive, fusing Oriental beats with a grooving tune that will appeal to both Eastern and Western listeners.
**My picks: 2, 5, 11 Ramzi Salti
