A compilation of new and forthcoming 7” singles from Daptone and related labels. Here we have some new music from the repository of the OG funk and soul from straight outta Brooklyn. There’s churchy soul with Charles Bradley, Afro-Funk from Rego, Harmony Soul from Bob & Gene, and instrumental funk groove from Menahan Street Band FCC clean. Try #1, #3, #5, #8
1) **churchy remake of Neil Young nugget. Reminiscent of Bettye LaVette’s 70s version (if you’ve heard that), 2) pleading soul weeper with wah-wah guitars, horn stabs, 3) **afro-beat funk in a james brown style with heavy organ, wah-wah and danceable groove, 4) hypnotic afro-latin groove more traditional with clave, guitar and chorus vocals, 5) **upbeat, funky and catchy harmony soul track with soaring vocals – this coulda been a soul classic, 6) bouncy, mid-tempo light soul tune with dancing guitars and gentle percussion and Sam & Dave-esque vocal exchange, 7) soundtracky instrumental with Spanish guitar (or harp?) horns – very pretty and light, 8) *dancing instrumental, also soundtracky with swaying horns, plucked guitar, shuffling beat
