Georg Phillip Teleman (1681-1767) combined elements of Italian style (sharp, colorful and expressive) and French style (cheerful, spirited, singing, harmonious) in the new “mixed taste” Germanic style. His works were popular with professional and amateur musicians and were known to Bach, Handel and Quantz. The Concertos are scored for recorder, oboe, violin and basso continuo, the trios for subgroups or violin, viola da gamba and basso continuo.
Concerto in G Major (TWV. 43:G6)
1. Allegro (2:38). Upbeat, rollicking.
2. Grave (1:55). Sad, walking pace.
3. Allegro (2:51). Quickstep dance, oboe and recorder dominate.
Trio in E minor (TWV. 42:e11) (French style)
4. Tendrement (3:20). Sad and reflective.
5. Viste Gay (2:42). The hall is merry.
6. Grave (3:04). We march quietly into the woods.
7. Allegrement (3:36). A peasant village waltz.
Trio in G Minor (TWV 42:g5) (Mixed styles)
8. Mesto (2:40). Sad, oboe lament.
9. Allegro (3:20). Life can be interesting it seems.
10. Andante (3:12). But sadness returns.
11. Vivace (1:44). If we dance quickly in ¾ time, all is forgotten.
Trio in F Major (TWV. 42:F3) (Mixed styles)
12. Vivace (2:50). We celebrate this bright day.
13. Mesto (1:23). An unexpected sadness strikes us.
14. Allegro (2:35). We recover and go about our merry way.
Concerto in A minor (TWV. 43:a3)
15. Adagio (2:49). How heavy a burden is life
16. 16. Allegro (1:42). A lively fugue, albeit in minor key.
17. Adagio (1:36). We return to sad contemplation.
18. Vivace (4:12). We have thought our way to bright activity,
Trio in B minor (TWV. 42:h6)
19. Largo (3:10). The violin and viola da gamba lament.
Trio in D minor (by Pierre Prowo, 1697-1757) (Mixed style)
20. Allegro (2:23). Who can fail to rejoice in this day?
21. Adagio (1:54). He passed away in the night.
22. Allegro (2:40). We celebrate his life with a dance in ¾ time.
23. Presto (1:50). The wake becomes a bit raucous.
