BB&C (BERNE/BLACK/CLINE): The Veil
Cryptogramophone, 2011
FREE JAZZ – Taking the notion of a power trio to a whole new level, this collaboration between noisemasters Tim Berne, Nels Cline and Jim Black kicks major ass, smashing together rock and skronk in an intense firestorm of alto sax, guitar and drums plus plenty of live electronics. Recorded live at the Stone, an improv hothouse in NYC.
All top-notch; try any track
1. 6:12 – 3-way improv jump moves to long tones, rock crunch & fierce squeal
2. 3:37 – slithery, sinister groove with scribbles, warbling guitar & hopping sax
3. 6:05 – slow and mysterious: drones, drifts, oozes with resonant backdrop
4. 9:32 – herky-jerky rhythmic prodding, energy rises, goes right off the scale
5. 5:50 – scattered, backwards sound, drum showcase, wailing sci-fi drone
6. 8:30 – jamming, songlike feel: repeated riffs become a chugging locomotive
7. 5:23 – calmer but still chugging, slowly drifts into open space
8. 5:02 – slow: sax sings in zero-g freefall, blooms in alien beauty, then noise
9. 8:18 – slooow: laid-back, slips into the inky void, returns with casual power
