PRESTER JOHN: Desire for a Straight Line
Innova, 2010
ACOUSTIC – Yay! These excellent guitar/mandolin duets may have a folksy Americana sound, but the content is forward-thinking music with a jazz orientation. There are eclectic references around the edges to avant-garde composers, gypsy music, modern classical, etc. It’s brainy music you can dance to, served in appealing, bite-sized morsels.
All really good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10
1. 4:03 – intricate call & response dialogue with a swinging middle
2. 0:32 – angular interlude, a good intro for…
3. 2:06 – nifty tune, alternately jabbing and sneaky
4. 3:15 – quick strumming, with exotic melody and rolling solos
5. 2:54 – strange creaks and plinks give way to a wide-legged swing
6. 6:52 – spiraling up-midtempo, solos bounce back and forth
7. 1:04 – disjointed walking interlude
8. 3:42 – oddly-shaped skeleton with an upbeat, lyrical covering
9. 3:30 – uptempo drive, straightforward and rather catchy
10. 2:45 – what a neat sound! quiet interplay and a big, punchy refrain
11. 0:53 – oddball tune surges forward, scurries underfoot
12. 2:37 – counterpoint-a-palooza! careful construction, midtempo
13. 2:16 – goofy walking rhythm, complex melodic weaving
14. 2:54 – steady pace, circular feel, relaxed & thoughtful solos
15. 0:26 – stabbing interlude
16. 8:29 – laid-back with interesting harmonic shadings, churning solos
