Thurston Moore: Demolished Thoughts (Matador)
Solo album from Thurston Moore, produced by Beck. This is not the noise/indie rock one would expect from Moore’s Sonic Youth. Instead one gets mellow strummed acoustic guitar (often layered with other gtr work), soft vox and violin(s)—even the occasional harp. Little percussion except where noted. Lots of rather beautiful instrumental sections. Songs are not hurried, but introspective. Earnest, evocative lyrics.
Best tracks: 01, 03, 05
01 Benediction 5:16: mellow acoustic gtr, soft vox, violin, gtr solo at end
02 Illuminine 4:03: mid-tempo, acoustic gtr, violin—lots of plucking, harmonics, a harp
03 Circulation 4:11: upbeat, heavy acoustic gtr stum, spacey overdubs, tom-toms, long instrumental end
04 Blood Never Lies 5:08: mellow, long instrumental intro w/ fiddle, gtr picking, backing vox
05 Orchard Street 6:57: mid-tempo, slight percussion, strummy, harp
06 In Silver Rain With A Paper Key 5:44: opens eerily; mid-tempo, acoustic gtr (layered), vox, violin
07 Mina Loy 4:02: mid-tempo, a little discordant, some whistling
08 Space 6:40: No singing until 3 mins in; nice spacey layers of acoustic gtrs; very mellow, minor primitive percussion
09 January 4:52: mellow layers of noodling acoustic gtr, violin; singing comes after 2 mins
