THE SHERYL BAILEY 4: For All Those Living
PureMusic, 2011
MAINSTREAM JAZZ – A fine guitarist with an understated tone and a prolific pen, Sheryl Bailey is best known for her trio work. Here she leads a quartet, sounding as good as always but perhaps a bit mellower. The tunes have a cool sound recalling Wes Montgomery at times but with an intimately personal touch, and really come to life in the solos.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 5, 7
1. 6:12 – swinging stroll at an easygoing tempo
2. 6:06 – midtempo waltz, very fine guitar solo turns optimistic, solid piano
3. 5:52 – soft, bittersweet air: bass steps lightly, guitar really sings
4. 7:00 – upbeat groove, classic style: twisty solo lines, guitar/drums trade off
5. 9:04 – catchy tune with a bouncy 5/4 beat: piano runs with it, guitar digs in
6. 7:04 – relaxed stroll, everybody sounds loose and friendly
7. 5:09 – skipping waltz: piano solo reaches out, guitar makes it cozy
8. 5:05 – upbeat and soulful, swings easily with bright solos
