ECO D’ALBERI: Eco D’Alberi
Porter, 2011
FREE JAZZ – Italian improvising quartet, recorded live at various festivals in 2008 & 2009. They have lots of energy and a fearless commitment to the moment, but they also sound very much in sync with each other even when things get really raucous. Good and edgy.
Try any track; they’re all impressive.
1. 12:22 – slumping start; sax busts out in a massive squeal over odd piano chords; falls into quiet for bowed bass, marches into complexity
2. 14:33 – starts with quiet interplay, becomes forceful with urgent piano and drums; ambient breakdown, gentle for a while, then loud… deflates
3. 32:00 – quickly rises to high agitation; sax blazes in mad brilliance; falls back to near-silence at ~8:00, but crazed sax & whirlwind drums drag it back to full power; piano & bass get really creative in the second half and have a cool duet starting at ~21:00, followed by the best quartet work on the disc; builds to another peak before the end
4. 09:10 – lots of energy: abrasive sax and scattershot drums, prodding piano; The most aggressive track, switches gears easily, hints at a groove
