JOHN ESPOSITO: Orisha
Sunjump, 2010
MODERN JAZZ – This freewheeling piano trio blends swinging drive and an open approach to rhythm and harmony, making for a gripping but really quirky sound. The tunes go against expectations, skewing just a few degrees off-center in lumpy clockwork grooves and odd melodies. Good stuff that maintains interest.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 10, 11, 12
1. 8:34 – opens with drum solo, falls into a strong but lopsided groove
2. 4:58 – delicate, oddball melody hemmed in by heavy circular rhythms
3. 4:03 – upbeat swinger warps gently, strains to accelerate and break free
4. 2:25 – bass solo: creeps and climbs
5. 9:58 – mid/uptempo: unspools in long, roaming strands with melodic breaks
6. 7:14 – solo piano intro, then trio swings but with prickly edges
7. 2:15 – drum solo, rolls and tumbles…
8. 8:42 – bright, playful mood jostles with uncomfortable harmonies, evens out
9. 5:12 – a high-flying, gently twisted groove
10. 5:04 – uptempo, choppy swing, with a drum solo
11. 4:40 – relaxed, bluesy feel: drifts on some nice chords, good bass solo
12. 8:55 – another version of #1, feels heavier but maybe more cohesive
