BRANFORD MARSALIS & JOEY CALDERAZZO: Songs of Mirth and Melancholy

SAX/PIANO DUETS – Marsalis strips his acclaimed quartet down to a duo for this relaxed session with long-time band mate Calderazzo. As is often the case with this configuration, there’s more of a sense of pure interplay than the usual soloist/sideman thing, a lot of openness, and a chamber music feel bordering on classical… which also makes most of the tracks sound rather melancholy, even when the playing is lively (hence the title).

1. 7:13 – upbeat strut: chunky piano riff won’t let go, tenor sax has bluesy feel
2. 4:28 – sweet, languid ballad: pure soprano sax tone, delicate piano
3. 7:40 – slow and dignified: wonderful soprano sax, melancholy piano
4. 4:31 – Wayne Shorter tune: slow, angular, introspective yet also soulful
5. 6:02 – lilting intro, elaborate piano solo, sax has a breathless insistence
