JOSÉ RIZO’S MONGORAMA: Mongorama
Saungú, 2011
LATIN JAZZ – There’s a classic sound in this very cool tribute to the late, great jazz conguero Mongo Santamaria, with material drawn from the 1960s. It’s rich with old-school danceable rhythms, hopping flutes and violin accents, yet also updated enough to sound fresh. Good fun, but the first half of the disc is much stronger than the second half.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 11, 12
1. 5:39 – excellent rhythm & Hubert Laws flute glide; violin solo adds class
2. 4:51 – upbeat vocal, and a grooving Poncho Sanchez break in the middle
3. 6:18 – sexy relaxed-tempo groove with strong vocals & flute
4. 6:42 – upbeat mix of soulful boogaloo and breezy sway: sax solo gets hot
5. 5:13 – cool defiant sound: good vocals, steady rhythm, late flute solo
6. 6:12 – laid-back boogaloo: vocal in English drips with soul, violin solo
7. 4:50 – cute wiggle: catchy vocal riffing, sax takes over in second half
8. 5:56 – dreamy ballad with Hubert Laws flute and romantic vocal
9. 5:54 – light bounce with vocal chorus, piano & timbales spice it up a bit
10. 6:41 – dragging ballad, keyboards and sexy sax add a cheese factor
11. 6:33 – relaxed cha-cha beat: sunny vox & flute, Poncho Sanchez chills out
12. 5:23 – upbeat shimmy, nice Freddie Crespo voc, jamming timbales & flute
