GERALD WILSON ORCHESTRA: Legacy
Mack Avenue, 2011
MODERN BIG BAND – Elder statesman Wilson (age 92), who has had a real resurgence in recent years, leads his talented orchestra through their usual riff-based paces, but he’s toning down the high-energy bebop fireworks these days. This CD includes a 7-part suite dedicated to Chicago, some hit-and-miss classically-derived romps, and nice tunes by Wilson’s son (guitarist Anthony Wilson) and grandson (Eric Otis).
Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 7, 9
1. 3:34 – striding, brassy take on a snippet of Stravinsky; sax & trumpet solos
2. 9:57 – relaxed, heavily arranged retro-urban feel, short solos start after 4:00
3. 7:34 – “Clair de Lune” becomes a blues(!), big-band glide, hip piano stroll
4. 6:18 – slow aria, switches to stroll: trumpet leads 1st half, saxes take 2nd half
5. 7:04 – calm ballad for flute & flugelhorn, with surprise speedy bop interlude
SUITE (all variations on one theme)
6. 2:09 – slow piano & band intro
7. 3:42 – slow intro, upbeat stroll
8. 1:55 – peppy bop bounce
9. 3:10 – hip shimmy, trumpet growl
10. 1:08 – sassy strut, high trumpet
11. 1:00 – quick spin thru the theme
12. 2:18 – slow, film-noir romance
[ Fo ] – August 2011
