WALT WEISKOPF QUARTET: Live
Capri, 2011
MODERN BOP – Very solid straightahead jazz, recorded live in 2008. Weiskopf, who wrote most of the material, has an urgent, braying tenor sax tone even when his lines are laid-back. Renee Rosnes matches, bringing her usual mix of firm propulsion and delicate depth to the piano. This is also one of the final recordings of the late drummer Tony Reedus, and he’s all over it, making a great impression on every track.
No duds. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8
1. 6:50 – prodding theme, sax & piano wind around strong drums, quiet bass
2. 10:49 – easygoing theme: elegant piano, sax pushes it harder, calm bass
3. 9:27 – quick spinning classical intro to a tough swing; solid solos all around
4. 7:52 – sightly angular stride with good drums: sax swaggers, piano rolls
5. 8:48 – folksong, melancholy yearning: complex sax, aching piano, fine bass
6. 7:52 – smoky ballad, last call at the bar: sax muses over wistful piano
7. 8:41 – standard as a breezy waltz: sax really digs in, piano sweeps it up
8. 9:29 – upbeat, oddball theme: piano & sax roll steady over hard drums
