Shehori plays Chopin’s (1810-1849) waltzes in the order in which they were composed, rather than the order of their publication. Utilizing this chronological order, he discovered connecting devices that range from starting a waltz with the note that ended the previous waltz to utilizing sophisticated harmonic relationships. In addition, he has incorporated Chopin manuscript versions in certain of the waltzes (Op. posth. 69 Nos. 1 & 2, Op. posth. 70 Nos. 1 & 2). Shehori notes, “These relatively diminutive works, however, reveal an infinite universe of feelings, thoughts and astonishing musical inventions.” The 19th cent. music critic, James Huneker, said that these waltzes “are dances for the soul, not the body . . As Schumann declared, the dancers of these Waltzes should be at least countesses.”
