WARREN WOLF: Warren Wolf
Mack Avenue, 2011
MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Vibraphonist Warren Wolf has been turning heads for a while now, most prominently as a member of Christian McBride’s band. Here he takes the reins of a first-rate quintet (including McBride on bass) for a soulful session of feel-good bop and slinky balladry. A bit too well-mannered at times, but lively.
Warren Wolf : vibraphone, marimba
Tim Green : saxophones
Peter Martin : piano
Christian McBride : bass
Gregory Hutchinson : drums
Jeremy Pelt : trumpet (1, 3)
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9
1. 6:17 – upbeat, jabbing & funky: everybody solos, but wailing sax stands out
2. 7:19 – not quite a ballad: sweet piano & soulful vibes, relaxed soprano sax
3. 6:02 – striding neo-bop, loosens up a bit under some good, quick solos
4. 7:05 – slow quartet ballad: vibes out front for most of it, nice piano & bass
5. 5:36 – bright sound, rolls forward: vibes & sax poke at the steady rhythm
6. 4:40 – Chick Corea classic: gorgeous solo work, vibes + marimba
7. 6:22 – standard ballad for quartet: waltzes gracefully
8. 7:39 – rather solemn intro, shifting tempo: strong marimba, resolute solos
9. 3:55 – quick bop rides a breakneck bass line, short rollercoaster solos
10. 5:30 – gentle piano / vibes duet: a sweet ballad, rocks softly
