Zanes is a musician whose tentacles reach around the globe to include everyone in his musical journey. His path including passing on musical traditions to children as well as adults. Though not a children’s album, there are songs here which definitely speak to the youngins. Lots of different sounds including reggae, blues, folk, bluegrass, campfire, etc. Instrumentation of guitar, bass, percussion, piano, violin, mandolin, accordion, horns, etc. A really joyful album, lots of great, great stuff. No FCC’s.
*My Favorites*: All are great.
1. (3:02) Mid. Blues strut. Piano, gutar, drums, bass, backing vocals with background vocals at a party. Upbeat and driving.
2. (2:56) Mid. Feel-good reggae / blues number with percussion, backing vocals, plodding beat, lots of vocals including some echoey ones.
3. (3:12) Mid. Horns, mandolin, percussion lead this laid-back groover.
4. (2:39) Mid. Folky bluesy upbeat with organ, guitar, drums predominating. Great vocals with some harmonizing.
5. (2:50) Mid. Campfire singalong with kids and adults singing. Accordion and toy piano? and percussion.
6. (2:48) Mid. Sierra Leone Refuge All-Stars guesting. Mellow reggae tune with keys, percussion, harmonizing.
7. (3:10) Mid. Little folky ditty with acoustic guitar, violin, mandolin, accordion, bass.
8. (3:28) Mid. Traditional folk song ‘Saro Jane’. Upbeat with violin, mandolin, guitar, tambourine, male / female vocals with harmonies. Really cool.
9. (3:30) Mid. Traditional song, a la ‘Iko Iko’, sung in French. Percussion heavy with lap steel. Great.
10. (3:03) Mid. Rockin’ with heavy beat, organ, guitar, male / female trading vocals.
11. (2:25) Mid. Old-timey vaudevillian jazz number with tuba, mandolin, drums, harmonizing. Great stuff.
12. (3:32) Mid. Upbeat with percussion, bass, guitar, accordion, horn.
13. (2:18) Mid. Traditional song with bongos, congas, guitar, lots of vocals. Upbeat.
14. (1:03) Slow / Mid. Vocal and guitar song about a hawk and us. Nice.
15. (3:26) Slow / Mid. Folky, bluegrassy with guitar, mandolin, violin predominating. Easy-going and
16. (4:55) Slow / Mid. Beautiful with strings, arpeggio guitar, harmonizing. Instrumental one-minute coda of song #5. Cool and a bit wacky.
