Aïcha Redouane, Maqâm d'Amour (Maqâm of Love); Le Chant du Monde (2011)
ALL TRACKS FCC CLEAN Reviewed by Abu Ramses
Born in a mid-Atlas Berber village, Aït Attab (Morocco), Aïcha Redouane has lived in France since early childhood. She studied architecture but became passionate about neo-classical Arab music. She also sang Berber & jazz-blues. Habib Yammine, a Lebanese musicologist Aïcha met in the late 1980s, inspired her to specialize in Arab music as a vocalist and qanun (zither) player. In 1991 they established al-Adwar, a traditional ensemble. Instrumentation on this CD is qanun, nay, violin & percussion. Album lyrics are mainly poems attributed to the female Sufi saint, Rabi‘a al-‘Adawiyya, of 8th century Basra (Iraq) who said:
"O God! If I worship You for fear of Hell, burn me in Hell.
If I worship You in hope of Paradise, exclude me from Paradise.
But if I worship You for Your Own sake,
grudge me not Your everlasting Beauty.”
For a variety of styles try 1, 2, 7, 11
