Poppy singer / songwriter. Owen is the long-time solo project of Mike Kinsella (of seminal emo/math bands Cap’n Jazz, Joan of Arc, and American Football, respectively). Kinsella writes, produces, and plays all the instruments. He has recorded much of Owen's output in his home studio, which I believe is in his mother’s basement. Lots of layered guitars (acoustic and electric) and upfront (kind of unpolished) vocals. The lyrics are literate yet personal, and the song structures are unusual. Not as great as some of Owen’s older stuff but still at the unexpected crossroads of my taste and Trent’s. FCCs on 2, 4, 6.
*1. Sad, pseudo-chamber, dreamy tambourine shake. (4:46)
2. FCC “fuck.” vibes, rhythmic bitter stride. (4:44)
3. Stringed, lush, sweet letter to his daughter about aging. (2:57)
4. FCC “shit.” Questionable lyrics, but driving slow guitar rock. (6:11)
5. Sing/song interesting guitar, sad, pretty, accentuated by elec guit in second half. (4:13)
6. FCC “fuck.” Spanish(?) sound. (4:36)
*7. Interesting (almost dancey) percussion, bizarre lyrics, emotive and affecting indie rock. (4:10)
8. Acoustic guitar-based sleepy singer-songwritery. Last two minutes are a louder but relaxed, dreamy guitar coda. (5:04)
*9. DJ awyeh’s favorite and mine. Slow pound that gets noisy with lots of guitars. (4:01)
