3 COHENS: Family
Anzic, 2011
STRAIGHTAHEAD JAZZ – Siblings Anat, Avishai and Yuval Cohen lead an ace sextet through some very tasty swing and blues tunes, a mix of old standards and originals with a nice retro feel. Vocal legend Jon Hendricks sits in for 7 & 10, but the action is in the instrumentals.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6
1. 6:40 – bright upbeat swinger, nice & simple: solos kick it around the band
2. 7:42 – delicious piano blues slides into a brisk, playful swing
3. 9:41 – Mingus-y sound: bass intro, then a tricky waltz with serious solos
4. 7:16 – Ellington creep: good ensemble sound, nice greasy solos
5. 7:25 – modernized standard, dusky sound with lots of horn interplay
6. 4:23 – speedy bop: piano glides, then horns all in together, drum solo
7. 5:13 – laid-back, playful vocal with some moaning scat
8. 4:07 – trad-jazz chestnut, with bits of klezmer and Latin mixed in
9. 5:33 – aching, bittersweet ballad, picks up a nice flow in second half
10. 5:02 – brisk swing: blues vocal with croaking scat, bass solo
