SÃO PAULO UNDERGROUND: Três Cabeças Loucuras
Cuneiform, 2011
AVANT WORLD-JAZZ – Jeez, Chicago cornetist Rob Mazurek has been recording like crazy lately, and every record has been excellent. Here he is in Brazil again for an electro-acoustic set with a unique and exciting sound. Guitars and electronics, video-game bleeps and weird improv, sweet melody and harsh noise all get mashed together in eight compact tracks. Really good stuff, very unusual. Check it out.
Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 8
1. 4:18 – bright energy: guitars & cornet caught up in a great, rolling rhythm
2. 2:46 – experimental noise & dirty cornet turns into happy electronic samba
3. 4:55 – strange electro gloops overwhelm brazilian beat & simple melody
4. 6:01 – lots o’ reverb: quiet strumming & distant cornet, builds up, drifts away
5. 5:15 – ohhh… fantastic sound, awesome beat! cornet rides proudly on top
6. 3:45 – circular loping melody lost in a rising tide of ethereal tinkling fuzz
7. 6:13 – insistent beat: cornet acrobatics in a thick melodic stew, false ending!
8. 4:58 – dark noisy electronics & glitchy stereo effects; picks up heavy stride
