Album Review

Grace Woodriff, singer, songwriter, and acoustic guitarist from Australia, with her debut album. There’s a mix of styles here, including folky, bluesy, pop, and straight ahead rock. Voice is surprising: low register and husky. The record was produced by Ben Harper; that should suggest the mixture of styles and influences.
No FCC issues.
1 * Slow, dreamy. Just acoustic guitar at first, then the band enters. Smoky, sultry singing. (3:38)
2 Slow. Spooky vibraphone and bells. The sinister thoughts of a middle-aged waitress. (3:38)
3 * Mid tempo. Electric guitar gives this a sharp edge. Sultry voice. (3:22)
4 ** Mid slow. A sad elegy; one web source says it’s about Heath Ledger. Haunting melody may stick in your head. Acoustic guitar and strings. Broken-hearted voice. (4:09)
5 Slow. Very blue and spare. Sung with a passionate, strained voice. (3:42)
6 * Slow, blues rock. Sung with a hoarse voice. (3:44)
7 ** Mid fast. A good hard rocker. Sung with a forceful, pleasing voice. (2:16)
8 * Slow. Sad and plaintive. Again that husky alto voice. Spare musically. (4:04)
9 Very slow. Sad and searching. Minimal piano accompaniment. Breathy low singing. (3:00)
10 ** Mid tempo. A big power-pop tune. Her best singing performance. Accompanied by fine rhythm guitar, piano, and strings. Quite good. (5:23)
