Great weird pop-funk from Denmark. ABBA meets Sly Stone (with undertones of Ace of Base meets The Apples in Stereo)
Fantastic all-out weirdo arrangements with a full funk brass section. Lead voice is weird and pipey and elfish, seems too strident for funk, but it works.
A real mod '60s vibe, if perhaps a more modern edge with the production. No FCCs.
1. (1:05) *** Instrumental intro atmospherics, with scream, great brass... flows into:
2. (1:59) ***** Structured brass stomping into weird screaming about "fame," screaming. Flows into:
3. (1:39) *** Instrumental outro. More ghostly atmospherics.
4. (3:58) ** Modernistic funk. Good arrangement, including brief organ break. Good line: "You're the toast of the Barbary Coast." Into a more major key at 2/3 in.
5. (3:51) Processed baroque organ, space-age S/FX. More of a synthy '80s feel in its chorus. But the happy organ is great.
6. (4.33) Bizarre little Martian-sounding lament. (In verses, song has a '70s singer-songwriter vibe. But somehow it survives.) Bouncy chorus doesn't make any rhythmic sense whatsoever. Flute solo!
7. (4:07) * Whistling and brass. Banshee shrieks.
8. (0:42) Instrumental intro, humming. To...
9. (5:24) ** Fuzzy low, depressive funk, swaying vocals. Nice and subtle.
10. (4:08) ** Bubblegum pop about the mafia. "Gonna get ya." Spaceship keyboard. A brief appearance from the vocoder voice of god.
11. (4:37) Strident, a little too strident.
12. (4:26) ** Space invaders sucking your soul!!! Is that a calliope?! This is so, so, so amazingly weird and saccharine.
13. (3:14) "Fantasy friend forever..." High, high, high energy. With "woah-a-woah-a-woah-a-woah" motif.
14. (3:30) **** Slinky '60s lounger sound. Pure Burt Bacharach.
