Dedicating this album to the late Vic Chesnutt, Nashville-based, Americana/alt-country/hard-to-classify band Lambchop return with more strings and piano than ever. Open, complex strings with a reported focus on studio precision, production, and performance rather than band performance. Fun fact: originally titled "Mr. Met," but changed to avoid a lawsuit from the New York Mets. Loungey, laid back, tranquil, nostalgic, with the trademark deep voice of frontman Kurt Wagner amplifying those moods. Lyrical focus.
Sounds like cigarettes on a rainy afternoon, or "Barry White meets Wilco" as described by Adam, "psycho Sinatra" as described by advertising
1 (4:25) [FCC: Fuck] Dancing, lightly jazz piano, contemplative strings
2 (5:39) Slow, lightly distorted vocals, plucking guitars, touches of piano, sharp drumming. Spanish-influenced guitar, phone conversation at end
*3 (6:57) Optimistic-sounding, lightly upbeat. Strings weave in and out among piano and organ; instrumental second half
4 (7:10) Methodical; lead instruments and vocals alternate. Nice, grandiose string parts/what sounds like backing fem vox at select points
5 (5:28) Instrumental/wordless fem "ooh-ooohh"s, classic film score dreaming about "what if"
6 (5:47) Scratchy, quiet intro; phone voice samples. Quiet guitar, slow pace, yearning, almost mournful
*7 (5:21) On-point bass, high piano tones, lush strings, strong lyrics
*8 (3:19) Upbeat with extra deep vox, noisy but restrained guitar, echoey
9 (5:28) Piano/bass/strings with plucky country guitar, wavering vox
10 (3:21) Piano-driven overture, fem vox "ooooh." Paris in an American film
11 (3:01) Uncharacteristicly Lambchop love song. Short, sweet, strings
