IYL: The Textones, The Byrds, The Stones, The Hollies, Wings, Sheryl Crow … see below!
Carla Olson has received critical acclaim for her work as a solo performer, band leader, and producer. In varying capacities, she has worked with former Rolling Stones' guitarist Mick Taylor, Percy Sledge, Ry Cooder, Gene Clark, Don Henley, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, John Fogerty, and many others. This is her third in a series of duet albums, where she collaborates with some of her favorite performers on new songs and a few covers. The first part of the album features performances by some of Carla’s favorite guitar players while the second half consists of vocal duets with singers that Carla greatly admires.
My favorite tracks: 1, 2, 3, 4
1. ***In Another Land (4:33) Stones-y rocker with Craig Ross (Lenny Kravitz) on lead guitar.
2. ***Face to Face (3:31) First single off the album. Rocker with walking bass line featuring Texan guitar virtuoso Eric Johnson. Byrd-see bridge.
3. ***Street Fighting Man (4:36) killer guitar-heavy version of this Stones song with Carla and 2 other guitarists + an electric sitar!
4. ***I Can See for Miles (4:43) Carla meets Patti Smith. Paul Stanley of KISS says: “Ferocious and BIG! I Love it!”
5. **Lead Me (3:56) Todd Wolfe (Sheryl Crow) puts down some cool rockabilly licks.
6. *(Just Like) Romeo & Julie (3:24) catchy, poppy duet with Harvey Shield of the a cappella group “The Mighty Echoes”
7. Stronger (6:28) slow, heartfelt ballad with beautiful baritone harmonies.
8. It Makes Me Cry (7:32) slow duet with Allan Clarke, former lead singer of The Hollies. Laurence Juber (Wings) delivers signature solos.
9. A Love That Never Blooms (4:43) slow, pretty duet of Clarke/Olson composition with Shawn Barton Vach on vocals and Laurence Juber (Wings) on guitar.
10. Cool Water (3:22) Americana ballad with B.J. Thomas. Features Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson) on harmonica.
11. Gypsy Rider (4:58) Live performance with Gene Clarke (The Byrds) slow, pretty Byrds-sounding ballad
12. Del Gato (5:12) Live performance with Gene Clarke (The Byrds) of slow, pretty Byrds-sounding ballad
13. Set You Free This Time (4:05). Slow ballad. Previously unreleased Gene Clarke (The Byrds) song.
