I Am That Thirst

Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2025-03-08
Old school Swedish metal band is back with new release, deep and heavy. Complex compositions with changes, “parts”, multifaceted, almost all with complex time sigs if not several within a track, but dont come across in that way, pretentious or try to impress, over wrought “look ma, i can play guitar!” Just taking “heavy” to a new level, not relying on constant 4/4 pounding. Production could be labeled slick by (ponderous) metal purists, like when Sepultura transitioned to Roots, which was a similar detour emphasizing heavy percussion-led complexity that relies on simplicity. All tracks great, all FCC clean.

1)* (5:35) bombs going off pounding drums begin with slow ethereal instrumentation, then creepy whispered vocals appear, turn death with 1 minute left 2) (4:56) okay, gloves come off, blast beats come on, full onslaught, relentless screamo vocals, some pull off guitar leads 3) (4:30) complex time signatures, keeps pounding 4) (4:54) another head scratching time sig, bad ass 5)** (5:13) downtuned heavy as hell slow tribal bludgeon 6)(5:25) off kilter abstract timing yet accessible and moshable, bending downtuned topsy turvy with bizarre guitar 7) (9:36) mid paced time sig shifter, tasteful guitar melodic leads, instrumental 8) (4:07) heavy doom, excellent 9) (2:01) double picking black metal guitar solo interlude 10) (4:40) big screamo vocals with pensive melodies over solid heavy off time pummel, this one might confuse the moshers in the pit near the end as the time sigs get a bit much 11)* (4:48) slow heavy 4/4 pummel makes up for the previous, sneaking the ofttimes when the screamo appears 12) (5:16) fast drum pummel with half time guitars over, intense contrast, slow yet fas 13) (5:48) obligatory nicely and skillfully played quiet solo guitar, did Page or Iommi start this? 14) (4:27) live version of track 8, studio quality 15) live version of track 5 16) (5:18) live version of track 6
