TITO CARRILLO: Opening Statement
Origin, 2011
POSTBOP – An impressive debut from this Chicago trumpeter, leading a solid quartet (or quintet) through a set of tough original tunes. He has a very even tone, sharp-edged but not cutting, with a bit of swagger to it. His writing carries similar qualities, making this a treat.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
1. 6:15 – firm urban bop groove; soulful sax, steady trumpet, rolling piano
2. 6:27 – defiant melody and trumpet solo; piano cools it down a bit
3. 7:59 – modern ballad with a bit of soul and glide: solos step carefully
4. 7:51 – intricate horn interplay in theme; trumpet/soprano sax solos stand tall
5. 8:04 – relaxed, gentle flow; TC doubles on flugelhorn and muted trumpet
6. 6:54 – very nice reading of a Latin standard, warm & romantic, steady pulse
7. 5:07 – simple standard-like melody into brisk boppin’ with swinging breaks
8. 8:04 – streetcorner vibe, midtempo and swinging with casual solos all round
9. 9:17 – slow and mysterious, horns stay close, then solos gradually heat up
10. 6:07 – gentle gospel tune, just trumpet & piano at first, then soulful quartet
