JASON ADASIEWICZ’S SUN ROOMS: Spacer
Delmark, 2012

MODERN JAZZ – Vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz (“ad-a-shev-itz”) is a busy guy; his distinctive ethereal shimmer is frequently heard alongside Rob Mazurek and other stalwarts of Chicago’s adventurous jazz scene. Here he is leading his own trio through a set of open-ended grooves and explorations. Nate McBride’s bass is buried in the mix, but the trio sound is very solid and Adasiewicz’s solos are inventive.

Jason Adasiewicz : vibraphone
Nate McBride : bass
Mike Reed : drums

All good. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 6

1. 1:36 – solo: rhythmic metallic clattering with a distant sheen
2. 5:59 – midtempo: gets stuck in spiral riffs, solos stretch out in long threads
3. 4:51 – uptempo rolling bop: vibes solo gets tangled up, drums push it
4. 3:48 – slower, moody and mysterious, real nice vibes sound
5. 4:44 – relaxed walk, noir feel: quiet bass solo, strutting vibes
6. 5:30 – stop/start theme; upbeat walking groove with prodding vibes solo
7. 4:21 – slow, careful tiptoe melody: a soft, dreamy feel like a lullaby
8. 4:49 – midtempo thump: vibes meander over a hard walking rhythm
9. 3:52 – calm & impressionistic: warm feel, wide open, becomes insistent
10. 2:36 – counterpart to track #1
