CHICAGO UNDERGROUND DUO: Age of Energy
Northern Spy, 2012

EXPERIMENTAL – Here’s cornetist Rob Mazurek again in what I think may be his 814th release of the past year. But dammit if they aren’t all really good. This time it’s his electronics-based CU Duo configuration with drummer Chad Taylor. Sounds like a set from our recent “Day of Noise,” ranging from minimalist ambient improvisation to ethereal melody to hard-edged futuristic grooves.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 4

1. 19:56 – dreamlike, in four sections: (1) meandering, melodic synth & heavily filtered vox; (2) adds slow, heavy drum beat; (3) spooky space tones, spastic drums; (4) cool Tron groove w/cornet & drums
2. 10:56 – smothering ambient synths at distortion levels, reverb vox say “it’s all right, it’s all right”; cornet adds some moodiness, synths fuzz out
3. 4:36 – lovely mbira (thumb piano) melodic cycle & lo-fi cornet improvisation
4. 6:40 – edgy, uptempo neon glare: synth & horn tweak out over hard drums
