WONDERFUL concert album. Continues a series of Jarrett’s solo improvisational recordings that began with the epochal "Koln Concert" in 1975. The pieces here are shorter, thus more radio friendly. The variation in tempo, style, and emotion is truly remarkable. Loud applause at end of each track, but concert hall quiet during the performances. Numbers i, vii, xii could be played on a Classical program.
No FCC issues.
CD 1 (Parts i through vi)
1 (i) ** Mid-tempo. Fast runs; jagged, complex counterpoint. Brilliant. (8:41)
2 (ii) Slow. Shimmering & dreamy like ripples on water, then dissonant. A bit dreary. (6:53)
3 (iii) * Mid-tempo with a jazzy swing. Upbeat & pop-song melodic. (6:00)
4 (iv) * Slow. Gentle "Stormy Weather"-ish ballad. Lots of improvisational florishes. (4:14)
5 (v) *** Up-tempo & very lively. Classic Jarrett: reminiscent of "Koln" with dense chords on the bottom, a bright melody, plenty of his signature groaning. Terrific! (6:26)
6 (vi) ** Mid-tempo. Both highly rythmic & highly melodic. World themes: hints of both of Asian Indian & American Indian. (7:01)
CD 2 (Parts vii through xv)
1 (vii) *** Slow beautiful ballad. Amazing that this is improvised, it's so good. Captivating and moving. Surely a standing ovation at the end. (7:29)
2 (viii) *** Mid-fast dance-like number. Hints of tango. Joyous with a generous dose of Keith's exerberant groaning. (4:58)
3 (ix) * Mid-slow. Pastoral tone poem. Hints of Japanese melody. (5:03)
4 (x) ** Very fast. Technically astonishing Speed-Metal runs. Dissonant like early 20C Classical. He vocalizes a lot, and it adds to the feel of it. (5:02)
5 (xi) ** Mid-fast. Quite a surprise. Boogie-Woogie stomp, a funky R&B melody, plus singing. Very fun. Wish it were longer. (3:20)
6 (xii) * Slow. Melancholy Satie-ish etude. Very doable for a Classical program. (6:10)
7 (xiii) Slow. Baroque-like: continuo on left hand, runs & flourishes on RH. Aimless. (7:04)
8 (xiv) * Mid-fast. Rhythmic & soulful. Gets faster, wilder to end. Huge applause. (5:41)
9 (xv) ** Mid-tempo melody on left hand under a shimmering RH tremolo. Somewhat romantic. Loud & powerful. (6:34)
No FCC issues.
