SUNNA GUNNLAUGS: Long Pair Bond
Sunny Sky, 2011

MODERN JAZZ – Beautiful music from Icelandic pianist Gunnlaugs. Her trio drifts through soft dreamscapes and optimistic strolls with seamless interplay, balancing lush harmony and a vaguely Nordic chill.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 9

1. 3:34 – serene melody, simply stated with luscious harmony, energy rises
2. 6:02 – slow, sways between two chords, feels almost like a lullabye
3. 4:27 – upbeat, flowing optimism: strolling bass & piano solos
4. 5:23 – very quiet free intro settles into a gentle sing-song melody
5. 5:36 – tense intro; turns upbeat as piano rides a tightly coiled riff
6. 5:32 – beautiful ballad sway: piano and bass take turns out front
7. 5:02 – relaxed & spacious: swaying rhythm, piano solo keeps it simple
8. 4:21 – Ben Harper tune: marches lightly forward, sweet piano solo
9. 5:04 – delicate intro, melancholy tune with dreamlike solos, lifts at end
10. 4:39 – Rufus Wainwright tune: fragile start, then relaxed and cozy
