This is a very sincere, sweet album that goes from soft-rock to folk to a bit of jazz, with tons of pleasant crooning and some uplifting orchestral swooping thrown in. This is his first solo album (Freeman previously of alt-rock group Ween) and he draws entirely from Rod McKuen’s material. The covers don’t veer very far from the originals, but Aaron Freeman’s vocals are compelling enough to make it interesting (he sounds like a strange mix between Jimmy Buffet and Stars’ Chris Seligman). Very pleasant, somewhat nostalgic feel from another era. No FCCs, try 3, 13. 1. (3:11) Super sweet, upbeat love song with chiming electronic blips in the background, harp and piano solo, pastoral 2. (2:55) Slow, exposed acoustic guitar, melancholy/forlorn vocals, builds slightly with blooming orchestral accompaniment, accordion solo 3. (3:59)** Begins with explosion noises, waltzing, folksie beat, ballad vocals, vaguely Irish, souring wind-instrument runs beneath 4. (3:28) Plodding shuffle, pleasant, rich exposed vocals, pensive guitar solo 5. (3:18) Mid-tempo jam, spacey synth, piercing classic rock guitar solo, crooning vocals, drops off and then builds back for last minute of sweet guitar 6. (3:49) Soft-rock beat, Jimmy-Buffet-esque vocals and harmonies, acoustic guitar primary instrument, melancholy lyrics 7. (2:57) Jangly, backup female chorus echoes phrases, super cutesy, sounds like a musical number from “Singing in the Rain” 8. (2:34) Spoken lyrics about overcoming sadness, beach, gull noises and slow, mournful, orchestral guitar beneath 9. (4:24) Bigger, upbeat sound, walking bass line, uplifting strings and chimes, march beat, fades out 10. (3:23) Heavy, plodding snare drum, mid-tempo, crooning vocals soar over, very sincere 11. (3:35) Harp runs overlaid on mid-tempo traveling/wandering song, reminiscing, slows down at the end and goes into harpsichord solo 12. (4:09) Jazz piano, slow shuffle beat, crooning, rich vocals, picture 1950’s upscale bar music 13. (3:48)* Upbeat, layered piano, guitar, spacey synth below “oooh/aahh” chorus and cheery vocals |
