The early 80s DC hardcore punk scene wasn’t particularly known for variety, but Void did a lot within the confined space of their short, fast songs. They were essentially the upscale Maryland suburbs’ answer to Minor Threat—snotty without looking at the bright side, aggressive with twice the dose of vitriol (they were known for their violent antics on and off stage—you can even hear a fight start in one of the live tracks), musically angular and quasi-metallic. Dischord Records has been kind enough to reissue all their recordings that didn’t make it onto the crucial split LP with Faith, including comp tracks, demos, and live recordings. The jagged guitar riffs, harshly spat vocals, frenzied circle-pit tempos, etc. = authentically punk as fuck. Everyone who grew up in the suburbs should play the song “Suburbs Suck” a lot; it’s damn near perfect.
