STEVE KUHN TRIO: Wisteria
ECM, 2012

MODERN JAZZ – Three guys who go way back: pianist Kuhn and electric bass guitarist Steve Swallow have a 50-year history together, and drummer Joey Baron has worked with Kuhn for over 20 years. Lots of intimate ballads here, but also some upbeat strolls and a bop romp or two. All good, but at its best when the mood lightens up.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11

1. 6:23 – lush intro, then a lightly boppish stroll with deep undercurrents
2. 7:03 – cool-toned ballad: rich piano, aching harmony, very nice drums
3. 6:33 – pleasant midtempo glide drops for quiet, high-toned bass solo
4. 4:27 – warm, romantic ballad: solo piano intro, then a soft trio breeze
5. 6:36 – relaxed Carla Bley tune: curving trajectory, applies gentle pressure
6. 6:43 – hardbop drive but a light touch: acrobatic piano, strong drum groove
7. 6:15 – lyrical bass guitar has a lovely, hushed air; piano takes over 2nd half
8. 5:47 – ballad: piano lays it on thick, but bass guitar lets the middle breathe
9. 5:52 – good forward momentum balances the deeply emotive piano
10. 5:31 – soft stroll: moves easily, nice trio interplay, piano builds up steam
11. 5:50 – bright sound, lively tempo: solos duck & weave through rhythm
