RALPH BOWEN: Total Eclipse
Posi-Tone, 2012
MODERN JAZZ – The sax/organ combo is most commonly associated with funky soul-jazz, but this all-original program only touches on that vibe occasionally, instead favoring a contemporary urban-bop feel. The quartet is very much in sync, with rich organ and cool guitar moving in tight formation over busy, sparkling drums. Bowen’s sax ducks in and out of the groove, rolling off long lines, but pausing to argue or shout.
Ralph Bowen : saxophones
Jared Gold : organ
Mike Moreno : guitar
Rudy Royston : drums
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 6, 7, 8
1. 5:38 – relaxed, greasy slide: sax & organ solos poke, question, scurry, yell
2. 5:36 – tricky rhythmic theme moves into a round of uptempo gliding solos
3. 5:59 – slippery, soulful sound; some quirky breaks and steady-flowing solos
4. 6:31 – frictionless groove: soprano sax gets busy, but guitar keeps it cool
5. 7:02 – easy tempo, shadowy sound with mystery at the edges, cool solos
6. 7:19 – winding melody sets up a thoughtful groove: solos have lots to say
7. 9:55 – sneaky rhythmic spiral, low spacey groove, sax & guitar stretch out
8. 5:32 – yeah! crazy drum intro kicks off a speedy, fusion-y postbop romp
9. 7:57 – relaxed, daydreamy sway; not quite a ballad but rather mellow
