MAÏKOTRON UNIT: Effugit Rant, 2012 AVANT-GARDE – This long-running trio of multi-instrumentalists from Quebec takes their name from the hybrid horns that define their bass-heavy sound. Maïkotrons appear to be constructed from bits and pieces of other instruments, with reeds, valves, keys and lots of brass tubing all twisted together to create unique microtonal sounds. As in their previous release (Ex-Voto), this CD is made up of short pieces that stretch easily across the spaces between the jazz tradition, classical chamber music and free improv. Challenging but approachable stuff. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 7, 9, 10, 13, 15 1. 3:39 – scattered at first, then a jazzy walking groove 2. 2:51 – very deep, gruffly throaty dialogue over brisk drums 3. 2:38 – strong bass and high animal squeaks, flute weaves through it 4. 3:04 – free jazz: clarinet/bass/drums in surging pulses, drum solo end 5. 4:31 – deep deep three-way dialogue: a conversation of bullfrogs 6. 7:20 – very spare: haunted flute, moaning clarinet, angry drums 7. 4:25 – active solo drums are joined by deep croaking melody 8. 3:53 – oozes forward with deep murmurs and trumpet-like squawks 9. 3:31 – boppish sax, free drums, and teasing low tones bounce around 10. 2:45 – speedy bassline carries bits of free horn along with it 11. 3:41 – exotic improv: harsh buzzing sounds mix with animal-like cries 12. 2:33 – urgent drums, tense bass, and thoughtful, exotic horn 13. 3:07 – slow and atmospheric with flute, reminiscent of Japanese theatre 14. 3:51 – strange fanfare, then slow, deep and very ponderous 15. 2:02 – layered improv with many interesting rhythmic phrases 16. 2:32 – subterranean bass groans and late-night sax improv [ Fo ] - 13 July 2012 |
