JD ALLEN: The Matador and the Bull Savant, 2012 MODERN JAZZ – Tenor saxophonist JD Allen turns is a master of controlled intensity. This strong CD features short tracks and his usual pared-down trio with bass and drums. These tunes stride in, make their presence felt in hot, boiling cauldrons, say their piece and slip right out. Play it all! Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 10/11 1. 2:52 – low and moody: bass intro and strong, soulful sax 2. 2:41 – turbulent drums here; sax & bass start relaxed, then heat up 3. 3:24 – hot, energetic drive: insistent riff anchors trio fireworks 4. 4:07 – dark-toned ballad, slow with bass picking out a winding path 5. 3:39 – creepy bass drone turns into slow grinding, opens up later 6. 3:59 – bouncy modern-bop cooker: sax twists & shouts, hot drums 7. 2:58 – melodic but slippery, medium tempo start, accelerates a bit 8. 3:53 – driving but upbeat: appealing sax lines, solid bass solo 9. 4:45 – thoughtful stroll: a sneaky groove with lots of bass space 10. 3:22 – solo drums, low & rumbly, set up a soulful ballad; drifts into… 11. 1:56 – …a very spare and open ballad with some great sax tone 12. 3:16 – rework of #1, much more angular with a walking pace [ Fo ] - 18 August 2012 | ||
