HARRIS EISENSTADT: Canada Day III
Songlines, 2012
POSTMODERN JAZZ – Drummer Eisenstadt’s Canada Day group has two new releases out this summer: this one features the group’s usual quintet configuration, while the other is an octet. The sound here is really marvelous: the band has such an easy affinity, such a cohesive sound, that it almost masks the unusual lopsided quality of the tunes. There are a few brief “out” flashes, but the group mostly stays in a space just a few degrees to the left of normal jazz, teasingly different.
Nate Wooley : trumpet
Matt Bauder : tenor sax
Chris Dingman : vibraphone
Garth Stevenson : bass
Harris Eisenstadt : drums
All very good! Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7
1. 3:50 – brooding pulse bounces calmly between vibes, trumpet, sax
2. 8:23 – relaxed feel: moody, growling trumpet and shimmering vibe shower
3. 8:25 – a series of off-center rhythms under various solos, brief group improv
4. 8:24 – solo bass into a nifty film-noir walk, soloists go out on a limb
5. 6:37 – relaxed flow with a bit of romance, interweaving melodies
6. 6:58 – slow start, then hopscotch bounce, trumpet goes insane, sax trills
7. 7:34 – very cool sound here: alternately mopey and an uptempo bounce
8. 4:46 – slow, moody shuffle: nice interweaving with some dissonant drifts
