4TH WARD AFRO-KLEZMER ORCHESTRA: Abdul the Rabbi
self-released, 2012

WORLD-JAZZ – Neato! This tight, funky 9-piece outfit blends jazz, klezmer, afrobeat and rock into a unique stew. The early tracks are great fun, but later on it darkens. Wild horn solos throughout, lots of chugging grooves, and even a hiphop excursion in track 7.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 5, 10

1. 4:13 – low bubbling groove under traditional Jewish melody, some hot solos
2. 5:50 – very bouncy klezmer first 2:00, switches to a lazy sway with wild sax
4. 3:20 – “Fiddler on the Roof” played as funky strut; skronking horn breaks
5. 6:52 – relaxed, slinky brass band slides into surf music! fast klezmer ending
7. 3:28 – hip-hop! Cool circular horn riffs; political rapped vocal, abrupt ending
8. 5:55 – laid back layered horns, gradually rises into a slow-burning trudge
9. 2:45 – chugging klezmer-rock gets into crazy horn solos, stinging guitar
10. 7:04 – wailing clarinet intro; then a slow blues creep, stomps at the end
11. 3:54 – quiet intro; angular rock-based tune, swaggering second half
