The ZOFO piano duet (Ema-Maria Zimmermann and Keisuke Nakagoshi) began in 2009 and has since toured internationally. The four 20th century composers on this disc knew and learned from each other, and embraced the piano 4-hand literature. Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, (1956) overture remains widely performed. Harold Shapero played 4-hand music with Bernstein at Harvard College, wrote his Sonata there and premiered it with Bernstein. Claude Debussy’s (1862-1918) Épigraphes Antiques (1901) exhibit his new harmonies and sonic style. Igor Stravinsky’s (1882-1971) Rite of Spring (1913) [rituals celebrating spring, with a chosen maiden dancing herself to death] was the third ballet score he composed for Russian impresario Diaghilev, and its avant-garde music and choreography caused a near-riot in the premier’s audience.

1. Bernstein: Candide Overture (4:20). Witty, up-tempo, melodies aplenty.
2. Shapero: Sonata For Piano Four Hands, I. Very Slowly (6:05). Dreamy, modal harmonies, as clouds float over a pastoral scene, and Pan comes out to play.
3. Sonata For Piano, II. Slowly (4:54). Bell-like tones over Impressionist chords, as water drops drip off tropical leaves.
4. Sonata For Piano, III. Fast (3:52). Jazzy rhythms, modal harmonies, hustle and bustle of a New York City street, in a good mood.
5. Debussy: Six Épigraphes Antiques I. Pour Invoquer Pan, Dieu Du Vent d'Éte (2:10). Quiet, moving.
6. Six Épigraphes Antiques II. Pour Un Tombeau Sans Nom (3:24). A Tombeau commemorates the death of a notable person. Somber, reflective.
7. Six Épigraphes Antiques III. Pour Que La Nuit Soit Propice (2:04). Paris after midnight, foggy, romantic, but with some agitation.
8. Six Épigraphes Antiques IV. Pour La Danseuse Aux Crotales (1:58). Translation: For the Dance of the Rattlenakes. Courting, not striking.
9. Six Épigraphes AntiquesV. Pour l'Egyptienne (3:03). Inside the Temple of Luxor, in the hours before dawn.
10. Six Épigraphes AntiquesVI. Pour Remercier La Pluie Au Matin (2:16). One hears the light rain of the title.
11. Stravinsky: Le Sacre Du Printemps (The Rite of Spring), Introduction (3:13)
12. Le Sacre Du Printemps, The Augurs Of Spring (3:04). Pounding rhythms, dissonant chords.
13. Le Sacre Du Printemps, Ritual Abduction (1:12). Terror.
14. Le Sacre Du Printemps, Spring Rounds (3:53). Benign dawn.
15. Le Sacre Du Printemps, Ritual Of The Two Rival Tribes (1:38). Hostile, dissonant, threatening violence.
16. Le Sacre Du Printemps, Procession Of The Oldest And Wisest One (0:34). Still hostile and threatening.
17. Le Sacre Du Printemps, The Kiss Of The Earth (0:22). Quiet, slow.
18. Le Sacre Du Printemps, The Dance Of The Earth (1:09) . Frenzy.
19. Le Sacre Du Printemps, Le Sacrifice (The Sacrifice), Introduction (4:27). The death scene is set and a deceptive peace prevails.
20. Le Sacre Du Printemps, Mystic Circle Of The Young Girls (3:18). Innocents walk in circles, some with ribbons in their hair.
21. Le Sacre Du Printemps, The Naming And Honoring Of The Chosen One (1:30). The mantic priest choses a victim, and malevolence cavorts.
22. Le Sacre Du Printemps, Evocation Of The Ancestors (0:46). Noisy, the bass calling out. The ancestors cannot be considered kindly.
23. Le Sacre Du Printemps, Ritual Action Of The Ancestors (3:53). They appear quietly.
24. Le Sacre Du Printemps, Sacrificial Dance (4:33) . The pain of sacrifice. No joy.
