Felix Lenferink: Forlane EP Label: Shipwrec
This is easily one of the most unique and funky dance EPs that's crossed my path in recent months. This kind of reminds me of the broken-beat sound from about a decade ago that was called "two-step" house. It's like he took all that was funky about house music to a completey different level and somehow made the sound even funkier. The risk is that you could have a cheesy product, but Felix's gamble paid off well because the tracks are so well-made and just sound dope. All three tracks are very funky and fun. #1 (First) builds a bit more slowly but is awesome at the end, while #2 (Second) and #3 (Third) are mad funky throughout. Love!
1. (First Forlane): This track is insanely funky. It's wild, wacky, and the electronics & funky bass grinds are all over the place, over this nasty-groovy broken-beat-dub track. Dare I say, this is what dubstep could be if it was hybridized with acid-jazz?
2. (Second Forlane): Again, insanely funky, but with a deeper and soulful edge. Excellent bass-driven broken-beat. It's like someone took some groovy disco-house, cut it all up, threw all the pieces up in the air, and let those little groovy bits of vocals & basslines fly all over this track.
3. (Third Forlane): This is probably the most soulful track, highlighted with disco-ish female vocals and a super-funky electric-piano melody that lays out a sick groove. The beats are again fabulously funky. Can't go wrong.
