REZ ABBASI TRIO: Continuous Beat
Enja, 2012

MODERN JAZZ – Guitarist Abbasi continues to weave small elements of Pakistani musical traditions into his sharply modernist sound. Here he leads a trio with bassist John Hébert and drummer Satoshi Takeishi; their stripped-down, angular approach highlights strong interplay and Abbasi’s often-shifting guitar tone, darkly shaded with subtle effects.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 6, 8

1. 2:34 – meditative solo guitar, layered with effects
2. 4:31 – upbeat intro becomes chugging, angular rhythm, intersecting circles
3. 7:20 – low, moody little groove; folksy guitar and propulsive drums
4. 7:48 – steady, trudging beat; sour and acidic in first half, open form later
5. 5:54 – mysterious and shadowy: settles into a deep brooding
6. 8:50 – dark, fusion-y Keith Jarrett exploration hangs off a steady bass riff
7. 7:12 – Thelonious Monk tune turned inside-out and scattered widely
8. 6:05 – loose, gently spinning tune: guitar roams, speeds up through middle
9. 2:29 – “Star Spangled Banner”: solo acoustic guitar drifts slightly off-axis
