Prince Fatty Versus the Drunken Gambler
Reviewed by Sadie O., 12/18/12
Great Roots Rock Reggae tracks newly dubbed with awesome guest vocals. Prince Fatty is British sound system DJ Mike Pelanconi and his toaster Horseman, guests include Holly Cook (ex Slits), Dennis Alcapone (one of the originators of toasting) and George Dekker, a fine backing and lead vocalist from Reggae’s golden age. Yes, it’s good!
FCC – track 10 is quite naughty.
1. 4:02 ****starts with bits of movie sounds, odd grunts… then upbeat bubble, fine baritone sing-jaying from Prince Fatty’s main vocalist. Bits of spaghetti western guitar. Top stuff.
2. 3:09 ***goofy intro, classic Who Shot the Barber w/ new dub and toast by Alcapone. Upbeat bubble with horns, goofy outro.
3. 2:59 ***midtempo skank with big band swingy horns, sweet vocals by Holly Cook. Bei Mir Bist Du Shein, no less! Horseman toasts.
4. 3:24 ***siren, then downtempo dubby bubble, great dancehall toast. Grotty guitar solo.
5. 3:31 **relaxed, swingy downtempo bubble with keyboards and cool instrumental noises, fine singing by Hollie Cook. Has an 80’s Europop feel.
6. 3:43 ***fascinating mashup of upbeat bubble and 80’s disco-pop. George Dekker guests.
7. 2:45 ***great classic lover’s rock, lovely singing by Winston Francis. Golden! Dubby!
8. 3:00 ***ha! More classic lover’s rock, with dog barking… And George Dekker’s cool singing, nice harmonies.
9. 3:27 ****fast dubby bubble, Alcopone toasts. Goofy. And what I fell in love with Reggae for.
10. 3:58 FCC – pretty clear what we’re going on about, here **starts with a bit of moaning, midtempo bounce, fine toast from Alcapone, naughty chorus… Gotta say, I want some of whatever she’s having, huh huh huh…
